The St. Louis area has always been a busy thoroughfare for travelers and a desirable hometown for new residents. Native Americans were the first residents of the area, followed by the Spanish, the French and finally, after the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the Americans. After the West was opened, this great area became the last stop before mountain men, trappers and pioneers headed to the new frontier. The Hill, one of St. Louis’s better-known neighborhoods, has been described by Saveur magazine as “America’s other Little Italy.” Dogtown is a colorful community filled with historic buildings.
